We all long for “it,” something to fulfill us. Many of us are trying to fill that longing with “stuff.” Every day we are told that we are not enough and we have not enough. But what if the problem is that it is too much? “You can’t fill a cup that is full” is a Zen saying. Meaning you can’t get something more if there is no room for it. Less is more. So many of us spend most of the time trying to get more “stuff” and we think that getting more stuff will make us happier. But happiness is a destination, not a thing. More stuff won’t bring more happiness.

#1. Less stuff – More space

We all need some stuff in our lives, but the desire for more things can get out of control. The Pareto principle also is known as the 80/20 rule tells us that for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. The Pareto principles relate to our stuff as well. In general, we use 20% of our stuff 80% of the time. Get rid of the stuff you don’t use in your home and life and fill it with the things you love.

#2. Less distraction – More focus

We live in an exciting time we call the Age of Information, but we could also it the Age of Distraction. Multitasking is an illusion. Neuroscientist Earl Miller notes that our brains are “not wired to multitask. When people think they’re multitasking, what they’re doing is just switching from one task to another very rapidly. And every time they do, there’s a cognitive cost.” We think we save time, but we don’t. We just use more energy and are getting stressed. Do one thing at the time, and you will do more, do it better and feel more fulfilled.

#3. Less To Do – More To Be

We are human beings, not human doings. One of Taoism’s most important concepts is Wu Wei, which translates as “non-doing” or “non-action.” A better way to think of it is “Action of non-action.” Wu Wei refers to a state of being where our actions are simply in alignment with the ebb and flow of mother nature. It is a “going with the flow” characterized by ease and awareness, in which – without even trying – we’re able to respond perfectly to whatever situations arise. Follow the nature and let the rhythm of nature be your guide. Sounds complicated? Give it a try – just sit down, and allow your body to talk to you.

#4. Less meat – More vegetables

The list of health benefit for eating less meat is long. And not only will you help your body, but also this planet. Are you not ready to go vegan, make it simple, just focus on eating more vegetables and less meat. You will feel lighter and happier. Your body and the Planet will thank you.

#5. Less Ego – More Soul

When we take things personally, we are giving others more power over us than they deserve. If you are allowing someone to question what you feel you are trusting someone else instead of relying on what you know to be true. Taking things personally keeps us tied to someone else. Instead of reacting when someone pushes your buttons, look at it from an impersonal point of view. What people say and do is a reflection of them, not you. If we can look at thing symbolic and not personal, we will feel free.

#6. Less focus on missing – More on gratitude

Gratitude means being thankful, counting your blessings, notice simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. Giving thanks makes people happier, strengthens relationships, improves health, and it reduces stress. “Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.” Epicurus

#7. Less synthetic – More natural

There is a benefit of using natural fibers. From wool to cotton to linen to hemp, natural fiber is environmentally friendly fabrics. Synthetic fabrics (those made from petrochemicals) can be harmful to the environment for the following reasons: The materials are made from non-renewable resources and take massive amounts of energy to produce. 60% of what we put on our skin gets absorbed into the bloodstream, when we use clothes treated with chemicals our skin absorbs it. Wearing toxic fabrics can affect health. Not only for yourself but also for the factory workers. A Canadian study found that women working in acrylic textile factories had seven times the risk of breast cancer than the rest of the population. If you choose to use natural fabric, you, the planet and the factory workers will be healthier and happier.
